The UK has slipped in the rankings of most attractive global work destinations, dropping to third behind the United States and Canada

It has also fallen out of the top five most desirable work destinations for European employees to sixth place, despite being in second place in 2012, according to research from BDO.

The UK has dropped three percentage points since 2012 to 19% – the same as Australia – after respondents around the world were asked to rank the top three places they would like to relocate to.

Paul Eagland, managing partner at BDO said that with UK businesses already struggling with skills shortages and Brexit uncertainty it is “imperative that the government makes it clear to the world that the UK is still a great place to do business” and that it can continue to attract top talent.

The United States maintained the top spot for global respondents despite losing four percentage points since 2012 (30%), while Canada gained two points to take it 22%.

The US was also the most popular destination for European employees, despite losing 5 points. The top five for European employees were:

United States – 24%

Germany – 20%

Switzerland – 20%

Australia – 20%

Canada – 20%

The survey also found that 18% of employees said they’d be likely to take a full time job in a new country for up to two years, with no other incentives than a pay rise.
