3 Common Myths Debunkend
If you look around your University class, only a few of you will stay to work in the UK.
Students leave their applications too late, apply for jobs where they won’t get sponsorship, or do not get professional support and advice which leads to an uninspiring return home empty handed.
Before you read this report we want to smash 3 Myths that may be stopping you getting a top graduate job and staying in the UK.
1. I can only work in the field that I studied
Whether you studied HR Management, Maths, Supply Chain Logistics or Finance, do not be limited to only applying for jobs you studied for.
As you can see from the table below there are more jobs in some industries than others.
Your chances have already been heavily reduced due to a harsh immigration climate, don’t reduce them further by giving yourself an impossible task. You want to apply to industries that have the highest number of jobs.
As long as you have a 2:1 (70%) in your Bachelor’s Degree and can speak a good level of Business English you can apply for most jobs in the Professional Services industry.
You can join from ANY academic background.
2. I am not qualified/experienced enough to work in the Professional Services Industry
You don’t need to be. Unlike Investment Banking where it is advantageous to have some professional experience, in the Professional Services you don’t need any.
They will take you, train you and you will even be sponsored to study for a globally recognised qualification like the ACA (Association of Chartered Accountants) or the CTA (Chartered Tax Accountants)
You just need to be a good team player, not be afraid of numbers and have a willingness to learn.
3. I will apply when I finish my studies
Wrong. If you wondered when you should start applying for jobs, the time is NOW. Remember applications will close a minimum of 3 months before the start date, so that your Visa can be processed.
September Start: April 30th Deadline
April Start: December 30th Deadline
So if you begin to apply by the time you finish your studies in June or September you may be too late.
The key is to manage your time effectively and set aside 10-20m a day for your applications and preparation.
