IT Sector negativity surrounding Brexit

The UK's reputation is at risk because employers cannot find people with the skills they need and concerned may heighten in the light of Brexit. Mr Green said: “If British business is to thrive, then whichever party forms a government after 8 June needs to address the ever-shrinking pool of suitable candidates… as well as safeguarding access to the workers we need from abroad.”

The facts speak for themselves with a 28% drop in UK Job applications from EU citizens since last June (Data Obtained from ContractorUK from Reed). Undoubtedly this will mean less competition for current IT contractors in the UK market, but this may hinder rates and also end user satisfaction.

60% of employers within the IT sector are negative in light of Brexit with fewer jobs and potential higher employment following the UK's exit in the EU. Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) is hopeful that the UK's immigration system in light of Brexit is made: 'agile enough to reflect and adapt to the evolving labour market needs'.

With UK and especially London's IT market surging with Cloud Technology and the rise of Fintechs and Techie start ups something has to give. Within these areas the main needs recognised by REC include:

  • Cyber Security

  • Ruby Development

  • General Development

  • PHP Development

  • Testing

In such niche areas especially drilling down into specific technologies such as Big Data/Data Science and ServiceNow as examples, talent from outside even the EU is paramount. Many areas are saturated and needs of the businesses is so great we must look further afield. Companies open to candidates requiring sponsorship are important and also gives smaller startups the opportunity to consult with consultancies who have skilled employees.
